Islands In The Sky

Home

Although Route 66 was chartered in 1926, it wasn’t until a decade later that the highway became well known—chiefly for the sorrows of the Dustbowl Refugees. America did everything possible to distract itself from the Great Depression. We dreamed of Islands in the Sky, great dirigibles that could take us away from our troubles. But by the time World War II was over, it was the automobile that captured our fancy. The heyday of Route 66 lasted from the mid-1930s until the mid-1960s. From then on, it was credit cards and jet travel. Now we’re on the road again, rediscovering what enchanted us all those years ago, along old Route 66.
